YouTuber Builds $500 DDR5 RAM Kit for Just $175

A YouTuber has successfully converted laptop DDR5 memory into high-speed desktop RAM for just $175, offering an unusual alternative as memory prices continue to rise.

The YouTuber, known as Blighted Agent, purchased 32GB of used DDR5 laptop memory for $120 and spent another $55 on additional components.

The total cost was significantly lower than the price of some 32GB desktop DDR5 kits, which were reportedly selling for more than $500 on Newegg.

The modified memory also achieved speeds of 7,800 MT/s after overclocking.

How Laptop RAM Was Converted Into Desktop RAM

Blighted Agent purchased two 16GB DDR5 SO-DIMM memory modules through Facebook Marketplace.

SO-DIMM modules are smaller memory sticks commonly used in laptops, while desktop computers generally use larger DIMM modules.

Because these two formats have different physical designs, laptop RAM cannot normally be installed directly into a standard desktop memory slot.

To overcome this limitation, the YouTuber removed the memory chips and supporting components from the original laptop modules.

The process involved heating the modules and carefully removing their memory chips, BIOS chips, and Serial Presence Detect (SPD) components.

Blighted Agent then purchased blank desktop DDR5 circuit boards and heatsinks from AliExpress.

After cleaning the memory chips, the YouTuber used a process called reballing to attach tiny solder balls to the chips before installing them on the new circuit boards.

Reballing requires precise placement because incorrectly connected solder joints can prevent the memory from working.

Once the chips and supporting components were installed, the newly assembled desktop memory modules were tested through the computer’s BIOS.

Heatsinks were then attached to complete the conversion.

Converted DDR5 RAM Reaches 7,800 MT/s

The converted memory kit reportedly achieved a transfer rate of 7,800 MT/s with CL38 timings after overclocking.

This is significantly faster than the original laptop memory’s rated DDR5-5600 speed.

Blighted Agent also conducted a stability test lasting approximately 90 minutes, during which the memory reportedly operated without errors.

The YouTuber said the modified RAM worked normally during everyday use without causing Windows blue-screen errors.

However, the limited testing does not guarantee long-term reliability.

A Cheaper Alternative During the RAM Price Crisis

The project cost approximately $175, including $120 for the original laptop memory and $55 for the additional components.

By comparison, some 32GB DDR5 desktop memory kits were reportedly priced above $500 on Newegg.

That represents a potential saving of more than $325 compared with those retail listings, excluding the cost of specialized equipment and the time required for the conversion.

However, converting laptop RAM into desktop RAM is not a practical solution for most computer users.

The procedure requires advanced soldering skills, specialized equipment, and careful handling of delicate electronic components.

A mistake during the conversion could permanently damage the memory chips or prevent the finished modules from working.

Nevertheless, the project demonstrates that laptop memory chips can be reused to build high-speed desktop RAM, potentially offering another way to reduce costs while DDR5 prices remain high.
