ChatGPT Rival Anthropic Files for IPO After $80 Billion Loss
Anthropic, the company behind the Claude AI chatbot, has officially filed for an initial public offering (IPO) in the United States, revealing rapid revenue growth alongside massive reported losses.
The company submitted its filing to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on October 26, 2026, as it prepares to sell shares to the public for the first time.
Anthropic plans to list on the Nasdaq stock exchange under the ticker symbol ANT. However, it has not yet announced its expected share price or how much money it intends to raise.
Revenue Surges, but Losses Remain High
Anthropic reported $16.3 billion in revenue during the first six months of 2026, compared with $1.2 billion during the same period last year.
This represents an increase of nearly 14 times as demand for the company’s AI products continues to grow.
Despite the revenue increase, Anthropic recorded an operating loss of $693 million during the first half of 2026.
However, that figure was significantly lower than the $2.1 billion operating loss reported during the first six months of 2025.
The company’s reported net loss reached $80.7 billion. Most of that amount resulted from accounting adjustments related to convertible debt rather than money spent directly on running the business.
Anthropic warned investors that it may not achieve or maintain profitability in the future.
| Financial Metric | First Half of 2025 | First Half of 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $1.2 billion | $16.3 billion |
| Operating Loss | $2.1 billion | $693 million |
| Net Loss | $13 billion | $80.7 billion |
Thousands of Businesses Are Paying for Claude
Anthropic’s IPO filing also revealed the size of its business customer base.
By the end of September 2026, the company had more than 11,900 customers spending at least $100,000 annually on its services.
Of these, approximately 1,900 customers were spending $1 million or more each year.
Around 250 customers were paying at least $10 million annually.
These figures show that Anthropic is attracting businesses willing to spend substantial amounts on AI tools and services.
Founders Will Keep Control After IPO
Although Anthropic plans to sell shares to the public, its seven co-founders will retain control over major shareholder decisions.
The founders will collectively hold 50.1% of the company’s voting power through a special organization called Founder LLC.
The group includes Dario Amodei, Daniela Amodei, Tom Brown, Jack Clark, Jared Kaplan, Sam McCandlish, and Christopher Olah.
Anthropic says this arrangement will help protect its focus on AI safety as the company grows.
However, it also means public shareholders will have limited influence over important company decisions, even if they collectively own a significant portion of its shares.
Anthropic’s Long-Term Benefit Trust, established in 2023, will also have the authority to appoint most of the company’s board members.
The trust was created to ensure that Anthropic continues working toward its stated public benefit goals.
Anthropic Warns About AI Risks
The filing also highlights the potential dangers associated with advanced artificial intelligence.
Anthropic acknowledged that increasingly powerful AI systems could create serious risks, including potentially catastrophic consequences for humanity.
The company says its unusual ownership and voting structure is intended to ensure that safety remains a priority even after it becomes publicly traded.
However, the arrangement has raised concerns because ordinary investors will have less control over the company’s direction.
IPO Price and Date Still Unknown
Anthropic has not yet revealed the number of shares it plans to sell, the expected IPO price, or the total amount it hopes to raise.
The filing marks an important step toward the company’s public market debut, but the offering still needs to complete the necessary regulatory process.
If completed, Anthropic’s IPO could become one of the most closely watched stock market listings in the AI industry.
