The European Mathematical Society (EMS) has recognized Government College University (GCU) Lahore’s Abdus Salam School of Mathematical Sciences (ASSMS) as an Emerging Regional Center of Excellence (ERCE) for 2027–2030.
The recognition comes 15 years after the school first received the designation in 2011, when it became the first institution in the world to earn the distinction.
The decision was made during the October meeting of the EMS Committee for Developing Countries and communicated to the school by committee chair Prof. Cónall Kelly.
The four-year designation is awarded to mathematical research institutions in the Global South that demonstrate strong research capabilities and play a leading role in postgraduate education.
GCU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Muhammad Omer Chaudhry attributed the achievement to institutional reforms and initiatives introduced over the past 18 months.
He congratulated ASSMS In-Charge Prof. Dr. Khurram Shabbir and his team, describing the development as a significant achievement for the university and Pakistan’s academic community.
The vice chancellor also reaffirmed GCU’s commitment to strengthening its national and international standing in higher education and research.
