Hina Pervez Butt Faces Backlash for Praising Alleged Extrajudicial Killings

Concerns over alleged extrajudicial killings have grown after Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) lawmaker Hina Parvez Butt praised the deaths of two suspects in separate incidents involving police, describing them as justice.

Butt shared a news report about the death of Tauqeer Nazir, who was accused of running over and killing 15-year-old Waseem Abbas in Multan.

Nazir was reportedly killed in a police encounter near Bahawalpur. Police claimed that he had escaped custody and was later shot by his alleged accomplices when officers attempted to rearrest him.

In her now-deleted post on X, Butt praised the Punjab government, saying, “This is Maryam Nawaz’s government, where justice is delivered immediately.”

Earlier, in another post concerning the Laiba Ejaz case, Butt shared a news report about the death of Muhammad Noman, who was accused of defrauding the university student. Noman was reportedly killed during an attack on a police team in Islamabad.

Reacting to the news, Butt wrote, “Alhamdulillah, Laiba has received justice.”

Her remarks drew criticism from journalists, lawyers, and social media users, who questioned how the deaths of suspects without a trial or court verdict could be considered justice.

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) also raised concerns over Nazir’s death and called for an independent and transparent investigation. The commission stressed the importance of due process and accountability in cases involving alleged extrajudicial killings.

Meanwhile, Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari responded to Butt’s deleted post, saying that the lawmaker had previously made statements that caused embarrassment for the government. She also rejected claims that Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz had ordered police encounters.
