KP Plans Free Medicines and Better Hospital Services in 12 Districts

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s health directorate has outlined plans to improve healthcare in 12 designated districts, with stronger monitoring of outsourced hospitals to ensure residents receive free diagnostic and medical services.

Dr. Fazal Rahman, director of the vector diseases and malaria control program, has been nominated as director health for eight tribal districts and Lakki Marwat, Bannu, Dera Ismail Khan, and Tank. Formal appointment notifications have yet to be issued.

Under the public-private partnership program, 15 of the 19 already outsourced health facilities in merged districts will continue operating based on their performance. Another 28 hospitals are being outsourced, bringing the total covered by these arrangements to 43.

The Health Foundation facilitates the management of government-owned hospitals through qualified private organizations to improve patient care.

Dr. Fazal said immediate priorities include outpatient and emergency departments, hospital wards, diagnostic services, and the provision of free medicines. Maternal and child healthcare, including gynecological services, will also receive particular attention.

He identified unreliable electricity as a major obstacle, particularly in merged districts. The proposed solarization of hospitals aims to keep operating theatres, laboratories and other essential services functional.

The directorate has submitted three-month and six-month proposals for immediate improvements, alongside a six-year plan for longer-term measures.

Dr. Fazal said promised funding would help ensure medical supplies and specialized care, reducing patients’ need to travel to other cities. Local communities will also be involved in efforts to improve hospital services.
