Court Accepts Sharjeel Memon Was Using Honey and Olive Oil in Alcohol Bottles

A Karachi court acquitted Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon and five others in an eight-year-old liquor recovery case, with his lawyers maintaining that the seized bottles contained honey and olive oil.

The Judicial Magistrate South ruled that police and prosecutors had failed to establish the charges or provide concrete evidence against the accused, who included Memon’s servants and prison officials.

During proceedings, the defense argued that forensic and medical reports supported its position that the bottles contained honey and olive oil rather than liquor.

The case originated on September 1, 2018, when then Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar made a surprise visit to a hospital in Karachi’s Shirin Jinnah Colony.

Memon was receiving treatment while in judicial custody, and his hospital room had been declared a sub-jail. During the visit, Nisar claimed that three liquor bottles had been found in the room.

Following the incident, Memon was transferred to Karachi Central Jail. Boat Basin police registered a case under Section 4 of the Prohibition (Enforcement of Hadd) Order, 1979, concerning possession of intoxicants.

The court’s acquittal concludes the case after eight years. The ruling was based on insufficient evidence; the claim about the bottles’ contents was presented by Memon’s defense.
