Scholarship Benefits and Financial Support

The University of British Columbia guarantees successful MSc applicants a base funding package of at least CAD 34,000 per year for the first two years of their studies.

Students who secure qualifying major merit-based awards worth more than CAD 15,000 annually receive a minimum total funding package of CAD 37,000 per year.

The university provides financial assistance through different sources, including research assistantships, teaching assistantships and internal or external scholarships.

According to UBC, the average annual financial support package for graduate students in the department exceeds CAD 36,250.

However, the funding does not automatically include a separate full tuition waiver. Students must account for their tuition fees and other expenses when planning their studies.

UBC currently lists annual tuition for international students in the program at approximately CAD 10,081.65. Eligible international students can receive an International Tuition Award of CAD 3,200 per year, which helps reduce tuition expenses.

The university also charges other student fees, while living expenses depend on accommodation and personal spending.

Eligibility Criteria for Pakistani Students

Pakistani students can apply for the MSc Biochemistry and Molecular Biology program if they meet UBC’s academic and research requirements.

According to the university’s admission guidelines for Pakistan, applicants generally need a recognised four-year bachelor’s degree or an equivalent qualification with first-class or first-division standing.

The department expects candidates to have a strong academic background in biochemistry, molecular biology or a related science discipline.

Applicants should have completed introductory biochemistry coursework, laboratory training and at least two advanced courses in biochemistry or molecular biology.

They should also understand organic and physical chemistry beyond the introductory level.

The department recommends additional knowledge of genetics, microbiology, cell biology, biotechnology, bioinformatics, biophysics and statistics.

UBC gives importance to previous laboratory research experience. Candidates who have participated in research projects, laboratory-based internships, or relevant scientific employment can highlight these experiences in their applications.

The university also considers research publications, academic awards, and conference participation, although these achievements are not mandatory for admission.

English Language and GRE Requirements

Pakistani applicants must meet the university’s English-language requirements unless they qualify for an exemption.

UBC’s graduate program listing specifies an overall IELTS Academic score of 7.5, with at least 7.0 in each component.

For the Duolingo English Test, applicants must achieve an overall score of at least 125 and meet the relevant component requirements.

The university also accepts TOEFL iBT. For tests taken before January 21, 2026, the program requires an overall score of 106 under the previous 120-point system.

For tests taken under the newer six-point scoring system, the program requires an overall score of at least 4.5, along with the prescribed section scores.

The department also requires GRE results from applicants whose academic qualifications come from institutions outside Canada and the United States.

This requirement applies to educational credentials rather than nationality. Pakistani graduates who completed their degrees in Pakistan must therefore submit GRE results.

Documents Required for UBC Master’s Scholarships

Candidates must submit their academic and supporting documents through UBC’s online admission system.

The university requires academic transcripts and degree records from previous post-secondary studies. International applicants must provide certified English translations if their original documents are in another language.

Applicants must also arrange two recommendation letters from individuals who can assess their academic performance and research abilities.

The department prefers references from previous research supervisors, university instructors or qualified researchers who know the applicant’s scientific work.

Candidates must submit a personal statement explaining their research interests, career goals, and reasons for pursuing the MSc program.

The statement should be between half a page and one page long. Applicants should describe their academic background, research experience, and the qualities they would bring to the department.

How to Apply for UBC MSc Biochemistry Scholarships

Interested Pakistani students must submit their applications through the University of British Columbia’s official graduate admission system.

Applicants should first review the program’s admission requirements and confirm that their academic qualifications meet the university’s standards.

They should then prepare their academic transcripts, personal statement, recommendation details, and required examination results.

The department encourages applicants to review faculty research profiles and contact professors whose research interests match their academic backgrounds.

However, students do not need a supervisor’s agreement before submitting their initial applications.

Candidates must complete the online admission form, upload the required documents, and pay the application fee.

UBC currently charges CAD 168.25 for international graduate applications.

After receiving applications, the department’s admission committee reviews candidates’ academic performance, research experience, and supporting documents.

The department then shares eligible applications with faculty members who have available research opportunities.
