Punjab Sports Board Hit With Furniture Corruption Scandal

An audit report has flagged alleged irregularities in furniture purchases for an e-library by the Punjab Sports Board during the 2020–22 financial period.

According to the report, the board paid two firms a total of Rs. 4.155 million for the purchases. Faiz Trader received Rs. 2.096 million, while Awan Trader was paid Rs. 2.059 million.

Auditors noted that bidding documents for the procurement were not uploaded to the Public Procurement Regulatory Authority’s website. The report also pointed out that 30 computer chairs were already available in stock.

In response, the department maintained that the relevant stock register had been presented to auditors. It also said procurement documents and supporting records had been provided.

The Public Accounts Committee has directed the department to determine responsibility for the alleged irregularities and submit a comprehensive report. PAC-I has recommended that responsibility be assigned to the relevant officers.

The audit findings concern the procurement process and existing inventory. The supplied account does not specify whether any disciplinary action or recovery proceedings have been initiated.
