PAAPAM Warns EDB’s Used Vehicle Import Policy Threatens 300,000 Jobs
The Pakistan Association of Automotive Parts & Accessories Manufacturers (PAAPAM), which represents more than 1,200 Tier-I and Tier-II manufacturers, has expressed serious concern over an Engineering Development Board (EDB) notification issued on September 30, 2026, allowing any business entity to commercially import used vehicles without obtaining an EDB license.
PAAPAM Chairman Abdul Rehman Aizaz warned that the decision threatens 300,000 direct jobs and 1.5 million indirect jobs, putting Pakistan’s local automotive industry and industrial growth at risk.
The association said removing regulatory safeguards, including requirements for after-sales service and spare parts availability, could compromise consumer safety and weaken domestic manufacturing. It also warned that proposed changes to tariff policy could undermine localization and expose local manufacturers to unfair competition.
PAAPAM urged Adviser to the Prime Minister for Industries and Production Haroon Akhtar Khan and the federal government to reconsider the notification and honor previous commitments to protect local manufacturers, jobs, and economic stability.
The association also sent a copy of its letter to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
