Karachi May Face Load Shedding During Peak Hours

K-Electric (KE), Karachi’s power utility, warned on Friday that it may introduce load management during evening and nighttime peak hours due to a shortage of re-gasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG) caused by global supply disruptions and delayed cargo deliveries.

“Due to a nationwide RLNG constraint stemming from international supply disruptions and delayed cargoes, affecting generation across the country, including KE’s territory, KE may need to undertake load management as an extreme, last-resort measure during evening and night peak hours, if necessitated. Daytime supply will remain largely stable,” KE spokesperson Imran Rana said in a post on X.

Rana said K-Electric was coordinating with Pakistan LNG Limited and other relevant authorities to address the RLNG shortage. He also apologized to consumers for the potential inconvenience.

Pakistan faced a similar situation earlier this year when power shortages linked to RLNG unavailability forced utilities to implement load management across the country. In August, the government apologized to consumers and promised to reduce load shedding as soon as delayed RLNG cargoes arrived.

Meanwhile, authorities are working to finalize the country’s liquefied natural gas import plan for the three winter months from December through February. Supply uncertainties linked to the US-Iran conflict have complicated efforts to secure sufficient LNG supplies for the period.
