India Blocks Internet Like Pakistan

India has ordered a 24-hour mobile internet shutdown in parts of New Delhi ahead of a planned protest, using a measure familiar to Pakistanis during political demonstrations and security restrictions.

The Ministry of Home Affairs approved the suspension within a four-kilometer radius of the Janpath–Kartavya Path crossing. The restrictions run from 10 PM on October 9 to 10 PM on October 10, 2026, covering all mobile internet technologies.

An October 9 notice issued by Delhi Police’s Special Cell directed Airtel, Vodafone Idea, Jio, and MTNL to implement the order immediately.

The document states that the Union Home Secretary authorized the suspension under the Telecommunications Act, 2023, and the Telecommunications (Temporary Suspension of Services) Rules, 2024.

The shutdown coincides with heightened security ahead of a proposed demonstration at Jantar Mantar over alleged irregularities in the revision of electoral rolls.

Police denied permission for the gathering, citing insufficient notice, alleged noncompliance during an earlier protest, and law-and-order concerns.

While the timing links the restrictions to preparations for the demonstration, the notice itself does not explain the specific grounds for cutting connectivity.

The order explicitly covers mobile data. It does not announce a suspension of fixed-line broadband or ordinary voice calls.
