NCERT, NTC Warn Users Against Poor Password Habits That Get Accounts Hacked
The National Cyber Emergency Response Team (NCERT) and National Telecommunication Corporation (NTC), Ministry of IT and Telecom, have warned internet users against reusing the same password across multiple online accounts, making them easy targets for hacking.
The advisory explains that if one account using a reused password is compromised, attackers may attempt to use the same credentials to gain access to other accounts. Password reuse makes it easier for cybercriminals to compromise multiple services without having to guess different passwords for each account.
The NCERT and NTC highlighted several real-world risks associated with password reuse. A password shared between email and shopping accounts could expose personal and financial information, while reusing a social media password for banking services could put bank accounts at risk. Similarly, a compromised work password could potentially provide access to personal accounts.
According to the advisory, the impact of compromised passwords can include account takeover, identity theft, financial losses, and damage to privacy and reputation. Hackers gaining control of accounts may misuse personal information or carry out unauthorized transactions, increasing the potential consequences for affected users.
The NCERT and NTC have advised users to adopt unique and strong passwords for every account, use a password manager, enable two-factor authentication, and change passwords regularly, particularly for important accounts. Users have also been advised to keep passwords private and report immediately to their IT or security team if they suspect that a password has been compromised.
