What Does the Scholarship Cover

The East-West Center Graduate Degree Fellowship provides financial support to students pursuing graduate degrees at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa.

The fellowship covers general tuition and fees associated with eligible graduate programs at the university.

Recipients also receive accommodation in an East-West Center residence hall and partial financial support toward meals and other incidental living expenses.

The East-West Center estimates the overall fellowship value at approximately $22,000 per year. This amount represents the value of the support package rather than a $22,000 cash payment made directly to each student.

Additional funding for field study and conference presentations may also be available on a competitive basis during the scholar’s study period.

What Costs Are Not Covered

Applicants should note that the fellowship does not cover every expense associated with studying in the United States.

Students remain responsible for costs that can include health insurance, travel between their home country and Honolulu, visa fees, books and educational materials, settling-in expenses, and summer tuition and accommodation.

The East-West Center advises students to seek additional financial support where possible. Supplemental assistance may also be available in cases of demonstrated financial need.

Who Can Apply

The fellowship is open to citizens or permanent residents of the United States and citizens of eligible countries across Asia and the Pacific.

Pakistani citizens are eligible to apply.

Applicants must pursue a Master’s or doctoral degree at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa while participating in the East-West Center’s educational, leadership, cultural, and residential community programs.

The East-West Center gives priority to applicants who demonstrate a strong commitment to the Asia-Pacific region.

Academic Requirements

Candidates must first qualify for admission to an eligible graduate program at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa.

The university generally expects graduate applicants to demonstrate at least a B average, normally equivalent to a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale.

However, individual graduate departments may set higher GPA requirements or additional admission conditions. Meeting the university’s minimum standard does not guarantee admission.

Applicants must also hold, or expect to hold before enrolment, a recognised Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification required for graduate admission.

Requirements for Pakistani Applicants

The University of Hawai‘i has specific academic-document requirements for applicants educated in Pakistan.

Pakistani applicants must submit properly attested mark sheets for each year of study. These documents should show subjects studied, maximum marks, passing marks, marks obtained, and the division or class awarded.

The university accepts records attested by designated academic officials, including registrars, assistant registrars, heads of departments, deans, controllers of examinations, professors-in-charge, or principals.

English Language Requirements

Most applicants whose native language is not English must provide proof of English proficiency.

Test Minimum Requirement
IELTS Academic 5.5
Duolingo English Test 90
Cambridge C1 Advanced 161
Cambridge C2 Proficiency 161
TOEFL iBT taken before 2026 61
Revised TOEFL iBT from 2026 onward Overall score of 3.5

Three References Required

The East-West Center requires applicants to provide the names and contact information of three references as part of the 2027 fellowship application.

Candidates should select referees who can provide meaningful information about their academic ability, professional background, leadership potential, and suitability for the fellowship.

Applicants should contact their referees early so that the recommendation process does not delay their application.

Documents Required

Applicants should prepare their supporting materials before starting the fellowship application.

The 2027 application requires proof that the applicant has submitted an application to the University of Hawai‘i, a CV or resume, and a passport biodata page if available for international applicants.

Candidates must also provide information for three references and submit the University of Hawai‘i statement of objectives required by their intended academic program.

If an applicant experiences a delay in receiving proof of their university application, the East-West Center allows them to upload a short explanation and provide the proof later.

More Than Financial Support

The East-West Center Graduate Degree Fellowship is not limited to university funding.

Selected students participate in educational and cultural activities, residential community-building programs, leadership development, community service, and other activities focused on the Asia-Pacific region.

Fellows live and study alongside participants from different countries, helping them develop international networks and leadership experience during their graduate studies.

How to Apply

Applicants must complete two connected application processes. First, prospective students must apply for admission to their chosen Master’s or PhD program at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa.

Applicants should carefully review the admission requirements and deadline of their specific academic department because individual programs may have additional requirements.

After submitting the university application, candidates must complete the separate East-West Center Graduate Degree Fellowship application through the online application system.

Applicants must upload proof that they submitted their University of Hawai‘i application, along with the other required fellowship documents.

The East-West Center advises candidates to review their application carefully before submission because applicants cannot directly edit a submitted form. They must contact the Center if changes become necessary afterward.
