How Much Will International Students Receive?
International PhD students selected for the scholarship receive S$2,200 per month. The stipend increases by S$500 per month after the student passes the PhD Qualifying Examination. This means an international student can receive S$2,700 per month after clearing the examination.
The stipend amount differs according to residency status. Singapore Permanent Residents receive S$2,400 per month, while Singapore Citizens receive S$2,800 per month.
Both categories also receive the S$500 monthly increase after passing the PhD Qualifying Examination. Singapore Citizens receive Central Provident Fund contributions in addition to their stipend.
How Long Does the Scholarship Last?
NUS lists three years as the typical award period for the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy PhD Scholarship.
However, the PhD candidature itself can extend beyond the scholarship’s typical three-year award period. LKYSPP allows a maximum PhD candidature of five years.
Students should therefore distinguish between the scholarship award period and the maximum time allowed to complete the degree.
Who Can Apply
Singapore Citizens, Singapore Permanent Residents, and international students can apply for the scholarship. This means Pakistani applicants are eligible if they meet the admission and scholarship requirements.
Candidates should have a relevant Master’s degree and an academic background related to the social sciences. Applicants should also demonstrate a strong interest in international affairs and public policy research.
The School gives preference to candidates who have at least two years of relevant work experience.
Academic Requirements
Applicants need a strong academic record and qualifications relevant to the PhD in Public Policy. LKYSPP generally expects applicants to hold a good relevant Master’s degree or an equivalent academic qualification.
The School evaluates applications based on the candidate’s overall academic background, research potential, and suitability for doctoral study.
Applicants should therefore ensure that their academic and research experience clearly supports their proposed area of study.
English Language Requirements
Applicants whose previous education does not satisfy the School’s English-language requirements may need to submit an English proficiency test.
LKYSPP does not publish a strict minimum English-language score for PhD admission. However, it notes that successful applicants generally achieve around IELTS 7.0 or an equivalent TOEFL performance.
Applicants should check the latest admission requirements when preparing their application because testing requirements may depend on their educational background.
Two Academic Referees Required
Applicants must provide two academic referees as part of the application process. Candidates should select referees who can evaluate their academic ability, research potential, and suitability for doctoral study.
Applicants should contact their referees early enough to allow them to complete the required recommendations before the application deadline.
How to Apply
Applicants must submit their PhD application through the NUS Graduate Admission System, commonly known as GradApp.
Candidates apply for the scholarship as part of their admission application rather than submitting a completely separate university scholarship application.
Applicants should complete the online application and provide the supporting academic and admission documents required by LKYSPP.
