Canada Introduces Personalized Processing Times for Foreign Students and Workers

Canada has updated its immigration processing times tool to give some work permit applicants personalized estimates based on the date they submitted their applications.

The new feature applies to applicants seeking work permit extensions from inside Canada and international graduates applying for their first post-graduation work permit (PGWP).

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) added the personalized estimates to its processing times webpage in late September 2026.

Applicants Can Now Check Remaining Wait Times

Applicants visiting the government’s processing times webpage can select “Temporary residence” as the application type.

They can then choose the new “Work permit extension in Canada” option.

The system shows an estimated remaining processing time in weeks based on the applicant’s submission date.

It also displays how many work permit applications are ahead of the applicant and the total number of cases currently waiting for decisions.

According to the latest available figures, around 202,900 applicants were awaiting decisions as of September 26, 2026.

People who have not yet submitted an application can also use the tool. In that case, it shows an estimated processing time based on applying on the date of the lookup.

Who Can Use the Personalized Estimate?

The application-date-based estimate is available only to certain applicants applying from within Canada.

It covers people extending an existing work permit. It also applies to international student graduates submitting their first PGWP application.

The work permit extension category also includes people already holding Canadian work permits who are applying to change the conditions attached to their existing permits.

Previously, the processing times webpage offered only one relevant selection called “Work permit in Canada.”

That option showed a general processing estimate based on the date someone checked the website rather than when they had actually submitted their application.

The “Work permit in Canada” option remains available. However, it now applies only to non-PGWP applicants submitting their first work permit application from within Canada.

Work Permit Applicants May Benefit From Maintained Status

Work permit holders who submit an extension application before their existing permit expires may qualify for maintained status.

Maintained status allows eligible applicants to continue working under the conditions of their existing work permit while IRCC processes the extension application.

The system was previously known as “implied status.”

In practice, it can allow an applicant to remain legally authorized to work in Canada even after the existing permit expires, provided the extension application was submitted on time and the person remains in Canada.

Temporary Relief for Provincial Nominees

Canada also introduced a temporary measure on June 9, 2026, to help many provincial nominees whose work permits are approaching expiry.

The measure applies to some permanent residence applicants under the base Provincial Nominee Program (PNP).

It allows eligible applicants to seek a bridging open work permit (BOWP) earlier than under the normal process.

Typically, applicants must first receive an acknowledgement of receipt for their permanent residence application before becoming eligible for a BOWP.

Under the temporary measure, eligible provincial nominees can apply without first receiving that acknowledgement.

The policy is scheduled to remain in effect until December 31, 2026.

Canada Expands Personalized Immigration Processing Estimates

The latest change is part of a broader effort by IRCC to provide applicants with more individualized processing information.

The immigration department first introduced personalized processing times for citizenship and permanent residence applicants in October 2025.

With the latest update, work permit extension and PGWP applicants can now get a more relevant estimate based on when they actually applied instead of relying only on a general processing-time figure.
