Punjab Announces Up to Rs. 500,000 Fine for Littering Violations
Authorities in Punjab have intensified action against littering, with fines reaching up to Rs. 500,000 for serious violations under the Suthra Punjab program.
In Lahore, the Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) and Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA) will jointly monitor littering through surveillance cameras.
The first phase of the crackdown will cover 10 major markets in the city, including Mall Road, Jail Road, Ferozepur Road, Gulberg Main Boulevard and Liberty Chowk.
According to LWMC Chief Executive Officer Sheryar Khan, PSCA cameras will be used to identify people found littering, after which LWMC field teams will reach the location and take action.
Officials will also be able to show shopkeepers video evidence of violations and impose fines ranging from Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 50,000.
People found polluting the environment or burning waste could face fines of up to Rs. 500,000.
Khan said the enforcement drive will later be expanded to other markets and commercial centers, as well as to people found throwing waste from vehicles.
Suthra Punjab authorities in Lahore had earlier introduced an e-challan system for littering violations.
Under the applicable laws, littering in public places can result in fines ranging from Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 10,000, while failure to keep the area outside a house, shop or factory clean can lead to fines ranging from Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 50,000.
Burning waste can result in a fine of up to Rs. 500,000 and imprisonment for up to two years.
