A Rs14 billion project to supply 10 million gallons of water daily to DHA and Clifton residents was formally launched on Tuesday.
Officials said the scheme would reduce the upscale areas’ dependence on water tankers.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the Dumlottee-DHA water supply project was held in Phase VI in the presence of Sindh Local Government Minister Nasir Hussain Shah, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab, representatives of DHA, Cantonment Board Clifton and other officials.
The project is expected to be completed in 18 months, although Mayor Wahab said water supply could begin by September next year.
The Frontier Works Organization has been tasked with executing the scheme.
Under the project, water drawn from Dumlottee will be filtered before being pumped through an 800mm HDPE transmission main to a DHA reservoir. Officials said the system will have a capacity of 10 million gallons per day.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Nasir Shah said the provincial government had allocated Rs14 billion for the long-awaited project.
He said the scheme was part of the government’s development agenda and expressed confidence that the FWO would complete it ahead of schedule.
Mayor Wahab said the project would benefit millions of DHA residents, adding that similar promises had been made in the past but had not materialized.
Project Director Colonel retired Arshad said the scheme would include integrated filtration and pumping infrastructure and a centralized SCADA system to monitor the network and help prevent water theft and leakage.
He said the new piped supply is aimed at reducing DHA’s reliance on water tankers and improving the reliability and quality of water supplied to the area.
