President Asif Ali Zardari has approved an ordinance to protect Islamabad’s Safe City cameras and surveillance infrastructure from damage and ensure recovery of repair and replacement costs.
The ordinance was approved on the advice of Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, according to a statement issued by the President Secretariat Media Wing.
Under the new law, anyone who damages, encourages, or instigates damage to Safe City cameras or other surveillance infrastructure may face a financial penalty. A fine of up to Rs2 million can be imposed for damaging each camera or piece of surveillance equipment.
Organizers may also be held responsible for damage caused to the infrastructure during rallies, processions, sit-ins, protests, strikes, or other public gatherings.
An authorized officer will determine the amount of the fine and the cost of the damage after giving the concerned person an opportunity to present their case.
The affected person will have the right to challenge the decision before the District and Sessions Judge, Islamabad, within 30 days.
If the imposed fine or compensation is not paid, the amount may be recovered as arrears of land revenue.
Funds collected through the penalties and compensation will be used to repair or replace damaged Safe City cameras and surveillance infrastructure.
