Microsoft has announced what it calls its biggest Copilot update to date, adding Home, Code and Autopilot while bringing Word, Excel and PowerPoint directly into Copilot.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said in a post on X that the company is building Copilot as a new “OS for work” that spans different AI models, devices and tasks.
The update brings together four major areas: Autopilot, Code, Home, and Office integration.
Autopilot Can Keep Working on Its Own
Autopilot is a persistent AI agent designed for enterprise use. Users can give it a role and goal, after which it can monitor channels, follow up on conversations, handle recurring tasks, and continue projects without waiting for another prompt.
Microsoft says Autopilot runs in the cloud and operates within an organization’s permissions and governance controls.

Copilot Can Now Build Apps
The new Code feature lets users describe an app, dashboard, tracker, automation, or workflow in natural language and have Copilot build it.
Code uses the same underlying technology as GitHub Copilot and can host applications inside a company’s Microsoft 365 tenant.
Home Combines Chat and Cowork
The new Home experience brings Chat and Cowork together. Chat handles quick questions and drafting, while Cowork is designed for longer tasks that users want Copilot to complete from start to finish.
Microsoft is also bringing Word, Excel, and PowerPoint directly into Copilot, allowing users to create and edit actual Office files without leaving the Copilot interface.
The company is also adding the ability to invoke Copilot directly in Teams.
A new feature called Today will automatically surface important information from across Microsoft 365, including emails, meetings, chats and tasks, without requiring users to ask for updates.
Microsoft says the overall goal is to move Copilot from simply answering questions to building apps and completing work on a user’s behalf.
