Govt Announces Huge Fines for Shop Owners
Shopkeepers who fail to register under Pakistan’s Easy Tax Scheme or file tax returns through the regular system could face fines of up to Rs. 50,000, according to a briefing given at a review meeting chaired by Minister of State for Finance and Railways Bilal Azhar Kayani on Friday.
Kayani directed the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and relevant authorities to help shopkeepers file their returns and receive FBR plates without delay.
If tax returns are not filed, the penalty will be Rs. 10,000 in the first month after the filing deadline, Rs. 25,000 in the second month, and Rs. 50,000 in the third month, according to the meeting.
The government has given shopkeepers two options: they can register under the Easy Tax Scheme and pay tax based on turnover, or submit their tax return through the existing system. Shopkeepers who use neither option can face penalties.
The meeting was told that 9,806 shopkeepers had joined the Easy Tax Scheme within its first month, with 1,929 of them being new taxpayers who were not previously part of the tax system.
So far, 428 registered shopkeepers have filed their returns, while others are at different stages of the filing process.
An Urdu-language information booklet has also been issued explaining the Easy Tax Scheme, the existing tax-filing procedure, and the penalties applicable after the deadline.
The meeting was also told that shopkeepers from both large and small cities are participating in the scheme.
