Three policemen serving in Islamabad Capital Police have reportedly been found involved in a dacoit gang that allegedly robbed Chinese nationals of around Rs. 8 million in the federal capital.
The gang was uncovered during an investigation into a robbery at a house in G-10/4 on September 13.
According to details, five armed men, including one wearing a police uniform, entered the residence after overpowering two security guards at the main gate and holding them at gunpoint.
One suspect remained at the gate while the others took the guards inside. The armed men introduced themselves as government officials and held two Chinese nationals, their cook, a translator, and the guards hostage.
The suspects threatened to shoot them if they resisted and confined all six people to a room. Two members of the gang guarded the hostages while the others searched the house and took around Rs. 8 million in cash.
The suspects also took away the digital video recorder (DVR) before fleeing.
Police registered a case under Sections 395, 170, and 171 of the Pakistan Penal Code, relating to dacoity, impersonating a public servant, and fraudulently wearing the uniform or carrying a token used by a public servant.
Investigators later traced the suspects with the help of CCTV footage. Their movements after the robbery reportedly led police to a police installation, which helped identify the three policemen involved.
The three officials were subsequently detained and, during questioning, identified their accomplices, who were also arrested.
The investigation further revealed that the robbery had been carried out on the basis of a tip. However, the person who provided the information has yet to be identified.
It was also found that the Special Protection Unit of Islamabad Police, established to provide security to Chinese nationals, had not been deployed at the residence as required under standard operating procedures.
The Chinese nationals had instead hired security guards from a private company.
