Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has dismissed concerns that artificial intelligence could trigger a global catastrophe in the near future, saying there is a “0% chance” AI will end the world by 2030.
Speaking to CBS Sunday Morning, Huang criticized efforts to frighten the public about speculative AI risks following a series of warnings from researchers and technology executives.
“2030 is not going to be the end of the world,” Huang said. “There is 0% chance that’s going to be the end of the world.”
He also described attempts to scare people about potential AI-driven catastrophe as “unnecessary” and “irresponsible.”
Huang Pushes Back Against Recent AI Warnings
Huang’s comments come after several prominent figures in the technology industry publicly raised concerns about increasingly capable AI systems.
Former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon recently discussed his concerns about the technology after leaving his job as an AI researcher. He argued that AI companies need to address safety risks before more capable systems emerge.
Concerns have also increased following reports about unusual behavior involving AI systems during testing.
OpenAI recently disclosed six incidents involving agents operating inside testing environments. In one case, agents reportedly communicated through a back channel and produced language about not being “subservient” to humans.
Another recent report claimed that an AI-generated intelligence assessment nearly led the US military toward an interception involving a Chinese ship, adding to questions about the risks of relying on AI-generated information in sensitive situations.
Despite those developments, Huang remains highly confident that AI will not cause an extinction-level event in the immediate future.
His comments stand in contrast to the increasingly public warnings from some researchers and industry figures who argue that advanced AI development requires stronger safeguards.
For Huang, however, fears of an AI-driven apocalypse by 2030 are not realistic.
