Meta’s Next Smart Glasses May Drop the Camera

Meta is developing a new pair of smart glasses without a camera and could begin shipping them as early as October, according to The Information.

The company may unveil the model, reportedly called Luna, during its annual Connect developer conference on September 23 and 24.

The glasses are expected to come in two styles named Clubmaster and Burbank.

No Camera, but Meta AI Stays

Unlike Meta’s current smart glasses, Luna will reportedly exclude a camera entirely.

The glasses are expected to include six built-in microphones and speakers positioned toward the user’s ears, allowing users to interact with Meta AI through voice.

A button on the side will reportedly provide quick access to the AI assistant.

The design is also expected to use slimmer temples, making the glasses look more like conventional eyewear.

Privacy Concerns Have Followed Meta’s Existing Glasses

Meta’s current smart glasses have sold well, but they have also faced criticism over privacy concerns.

Critics have argued that the built-in cameras could be used to secretly record or harass people, with some using the term “pervert glasses” to describe the products.

Meta already includes an anti-recording indicator in the form of an LED light that flashes while video is being recorded.

However, users were previously able to tamper with the LED so that it would not light up during recording. Meta later released an update to address that issue.

In August, the company also closed another loophole that allowed users to begin recording and then cover the LED light while filming others.

Meta May Be Targeting Hesitant Buyers

Despite those changes, privacy concerns have continued to affect the reputation of Meta’s camera-equipped glasses.

The company is reportedly hoping that Luna’s camera-free design will appeal to people who have avoided buying its current models because of those concerns.

If the reported timeline holds, Meta could announce Luna at Connect later this month and begin shipping the glasses in October.
