Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) has failed to meet around 60 percent of the indicators assessed in its performance audit, achieving only 39.7 percent compliance against an acceptable target of 90 percent.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday directed authorities to complete short-term measures to improve PIMS within three months, including improvements to its fire safety system and other hospital operations.
The prime minister directed that PIMS be brought in line with international standards. He also directed authorities to seek assistance and recommendations from the Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute (PKLI) for improving PIMS’s fire safety system.
The meeting was further told to consider recommendations contained in the World Health Organization (WHO) report and ensure their implementation.
The prime minister said the improvement plan should also cover the availability of medicines and steps to provide hospital facilities completely free of cost.
He also directed that personnel with a good reputation be appointed at PIMS and ordered the preparation of a comprehensive long-term plan for the hospital’s improvement.
The prime minister separately ordered an audit of Polyclinic Hospital to identify and address irregularities and prepare a plan for its restructuring.
He also directed the Capital Development Authority (CDA) to ensure compliance with fire safety requirements at all public and private hospitals in Islamabad.
CDA and relevant authorities were instructed to conduct fire safety audits of public and private offices and buildings across the capital and ensure implementation of the required safety measures.
