Meta Lets AI Agents Set Up WhatsApp Business for You

Meta is making it easier for businesses to set up and manage WhatsApp Business messaging through AI agents.

The company announced the change on Tuesday alongside its new AI-focused subscription plans. The new system lets businesses connect an AI coding agent such as Claude, Cursor, Codex, or ChatGPT to the WhatsApp Business Platform and use conversation-based instructions to complete setup and management tasks.

The capability is powered by WhatsApp Business Tools MCP, a new Model Context Protocol (MCP) server from Meta.

AI Agents Can Set Up WhatsApp Business

Meta said setting up WhatsApp Business messaging previously required developers to move between several tools and services. These included the Developer Console, Meta Business Manager, the API reference, and a code editor.

With the new MCP server, businesses can instead tell their preferred AI agent what they want to set up and let the agent handle much of the process.

The AI agent can create a company’s WhatsApp Business account, add and verify its phone number, and register the account for access to the Cloud API.

It can also check the business’s Terms of Service and handle other configuration steps involved in getting the messaging service ready.

AI Can Manage Messaging Templates

The system is not limited to the initial setup.

Businesses can describe a messaging template they want created, and the AI agent can generate it. They can also ask the agent to modify an existing template.

The agent can test messages and webhooks as well. It can monitor configuration issues that might otherwise go unnoticed, including problems involving the Terms of Service, payment method, and Business Verification.

This gives businesses a way to handle several WhatsApp Business management tasks through natural-language instructions rather than manually navigating multiple developer tools.

Meta Expands Its MCP Tools

The WhatsApp Business Tools MCP server expands Meta’s existing use of MCP servers.

Meta already offers its Meta Social Technologies MCP for tasks such as discovering API endpoints, searching documentation and troubleshooting errors. The company also has MCP tools for managing ads and monitoring app configurations.

Businesses can use the Social Technologies MCP alongside the new WhatsApp Business tool during setup and configuration, Meta said.

MCP is increasingly being used by technology companies to allow AI agents to interact with external services. Companies including PayPal, Stripe, GitHub, Notion, Slack, Salesforce, Atlassian, X, Google and Microsoft have also introduced MCP servers for their platforms.

Meta’s latest move extends that approach to the process of getting businesses onto WhatsApp Business messaging.
