Most Pakistanis Don’t Have a Pension

Assets managed by pension funds in Pakistan have reached Rs. 156 billion, up 333 percent since January 2021, EFU Life CEO Muhammad Ali Ahmed said.

Speaking about Pakistan’s retirement and pension system, Ahmed said the country had a working-age population of 134.4 million. However, the number of people aged 60 and above had also reached 13.5 million.

He said 72.1 percent of employment in Pakistan was part of the informal sector, leaving a large portion of the workforce outside formal pension arrangements.

Ahmed said only 143,000 active accounts were registered under voluntary pension schemes as of December 2025. He added that the number remained extremely low compared with the country’s large working-age population.

He stressed the need to expand government, employer-sponsored and individual pension systems in Pakistan. According to Ahmed, voluntary pension schemes and insurance-based long-term savings could play an important role in improving retirement security.

He added that the country should promote annuity payments, phased withdrawals and other retirement income products to provide people with more options for managing their finances after retirement.
