Seven federal government hospitals are facing a shortage of 2,108 doctors, nurses and paramedical staff, according to available documents.
The hospitals have a combined sanctioned strength of 5,602 medical staff, but only 3,494 positions are currently filled.
The Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), the largest hospital in the federal capital and recently affected by a major fire tragedy, has the biggest shortage. The hospital has 2,453 sanctioned posts, while only 1,419 doctors, nurses and paramedical staff are currently working, leaving 1,034 positions vacant.
Polyclinic Hospital is also facing a significant shortfall, with 893 staff members working against 1,132 sanctioned posts. A total of 239 positions remain vacant.
At the National Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine (NIRM), 132 staff members are working against a sanctioned strength of 161, leaving 29 posts unfilled.
Sheikh Zayed Hospital in Lahore has 793 doctors, nurses and paramedical staff against 1,216 sanctioned posts, resulting in 423 vacancies.
Meanwhile, the Federal General Hospital in Islamabad has 165 medical staff members working against 212 sanctioned positions, leaving 47 posts vacant.
The documents also reveal that 125 posts in the district health department remain vacant, while another 11 positions are unfilled at the federal government’s TB Centre in Rawalpindi.
