Four Muslim names have ranked among the 10 most common surnames recorded for newborns in England and Wales, according to a report based on Office for National Statistics (ONS) data.
The figures cover birth registrations in 2025 rather than the entire UK population, and relate to family names, not first names.
Khan placed second behind Smith, followed by Ahmed in third and Ali in fourth. Hussain ranked sixth, with Jones taking fifth place. Singh, Williams, Patel, and Kaur completed the top 10.
The rankings mark a notable change from 1996, when Smith, Jones, and Williams led the list. Taylor, Brown, Davies, Evans, Thomas, Johnson, and Wilson occupied the remaining positions that year.
Khan, Ahmed, and Ali have each doubled in frequency over the period. Meanwhile, Singh and Kaur, traditionally associated with Sikh men and women, have increased at least fivefold.
Jones recorded a 43% decline, while Williams experienced a similar fall. Smith remained the most common surname despite registrations dropping from 7,276 babies in 1996 to 4,102 in 2025.
The dataset counts exact spellings separately and excludes surnames recorded for two or fewer births. It does not establish the religion or nationality of the children registered.
