Two education officials in Fatehjang have been suspended over allegations of corporal punishment involving a sixth-grade student, while authorities have also ordered an inquiry into the incident.
The suspended officials are Mohammad Hanif, headteacher, and Mohammad Saleem, elementary science teacher, at Government Elementary Boys School, Kamra.
District education authorities initiated disciplinary proceedings against both officials under the Punjab Employees Efficiency, Discipline and Accountability (PEEDA) Act, 2006, after the student’s mother filed a complaint.
Chief Executive Officer of the District Education Authority Dr. Mohammad Azhar confirmed the suspensions to Dawn. He said the action was taken after the mother alleged that her son had been subjected to corporal punishment at the school.
The case has once again raised concerns about the effectiveness of measures introduced by the Punjab School Education Department to eliminate physical punishment from classrooms and ensure a safe learning environment for students.
The department imposed a complete ban on corporal punishment in all educational institutions across Punjab through a notification issued on January 23, 2018. The move was widely seen as an important step toward protecting schoolchildren.
However, reports of students being physically punished continue to emerge years after the ban was enforced, raising questions about the effectiveness of monitoring and accountability mechanisms.
