The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) has destroyed 1,000 kilograms of rotten and foul smelling meat during an operation against an illegal slaughterhouse in Al Madina Colony, Shahdara, on the directions of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif.
PFA Director General Raja Mansoor Ahmed said the slaughterhouse had already been sealed, but the owner allegedly continued preparing meat there without permission.
Officials found the meat heavily infested with flies and stored in extremely unhygienic conditions. A veterinary specialist inspected the meat at the site and declared it unfit and hazardous for human consumption, after which authorities destroyed it.
The slaughterhouse also lacked mandatory records, meat tagging, a valid license and other required documents. Inspectors found open drains, broken flooring, stagnant dirty water and a foul smell in the slaughtering area.
According to the PFA, the owner allegedly tried to obstruct officials during the operation, damaging an official vehicle. Authorities stopped his attempt to flee, arrested him and registered a case against him.
Raja Mansoor Ahmed said the PFA would continue taking action against businesses that violate food safety regulations under its zero tolerance policy. He urged citizens to report food related complaints through the PFA helpline 1223.
